In 2013 Matt Crafton begins his 13th consecutive full-time season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series standing on the verge of creating series history. Since making his series debut in the 2000 season finale, Crafton has competed in 294 consecutive events. Crafton will drive the No. 88 Menards Toyota Tundra for ThorSport Racing, the truck number that he's represented for all but 25 events -- the 2004 season -- of his Truck career. Truck Series veteran crew chief Carl Joiner Jr. will guide Crafton's team for the second consecutive season as Crafton seeks to continue his six-year streak of finishing in the top 10 in the Camping World Truck Series standings.
The native of Tulare, Calif., followed his dad, West Coast late model racer Danny Crafton, into the sport and began competing at age seven after receiving a kart as a kindergarten graduation present. Matt won regional and national karting championships, at times racing against future boss Kevin Harvick. Crafton moved to mini-sprints and midgets at age 15, winning 20 main events on both dirt and paved tracks.
Crafton's career break came in 1996 when his father suffered an injury with three races remaining in the season and he put his son into the seat to finish the year. Matt showed enough promise to cause Danny Crafton to hang up his helmet and take up the crew chief's role. Matt rewarded the family's confidence by wnining the 2000 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series championship, winning four races that season. That achievement created the opportunity to drive a second truck for landmark NASCAR Camping World Truck Series owners Duke and Rhonda Thorson, in the 2000 Auto Club Speedway season finale.
Since making his debut with a ninth-place finish, Crafton has been a hallmark of consistency, finishing in the top 10 in the Truck Series standings for eight of the past nine seasons, including a career-best second in 2009, and never worse than 15th. Along the way he's amassed seven pole positions and victories at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2008 and Iowa Speedway in 2011. In 2012 he won the pole for his only start in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
